The Horatio Alger Scholarship Program is a nationwide scholarship that assists high school students who have faced and overcome great obstacles in their young lives. Over 40,000 students applied, among only 106 were selected for the $25,000 scholarship. It is one of the nation's largest need-based college scholarship programs in the country. The application consisted of writing a short essay on what adversity you have overcome in your life and what you learned from these struggles. The students had to write another short essay on what you would like in a mentor while in college.
