WELCOME TO MS. COLEMAN'S CLASS

Hello and Welcome to OGHS!
I am an Education Specialist teaching the subjects of Math 1 & 2, SAI. In addition to teaching Math classes, I am an IDEA Casemanager for up to 28 scholars with mild/moderate learning disabilities.
When scholars are enrolled in my class, I hope they will have math fun and have a math vision that grows to them seeing math, everyday,  in their neighborhoods.
Hola y bienvenidos a OGHS!

I am a mother of two children: my son and my daughter. I have two brothers and I am the proud daughter of a career US Marine (my American Hero) and an Issei mother. I am first generation college graduate and first generation high school diploma graduate.
My educational background includes a Master's of Science in Special Education, Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts. I have achieved a preliminary administrative credential.

With Escondido Union High School District, I have been:
  • Department Lead for 2 1/2 years
  • Math PLC Lead
  • National Honor Society Advisor (9 years)
  • Member of the Guiding Coalition
  • Member of the Multi-Tiered Support System Team/PBIS Tier 1 Team
  • Summer School Teacher (serving scholars and  young adults with severe disabilities at SPHS, EHS & OGHS/ at the Learning Center, EHS)
  • Special Education Consultant during Summer School (2 summers, Escondido & San Pasqual High School)

  • OGHS Student Nutrition Assistant Manager(2 1/2 years)
  • Instructional Assistant Special Education (2 summers, OGHS)
  • OGHS Girls 9th Grade Soccer Coach (2 years)
  •  African-American Student Union Helper
  • Security & Custodial Staff (San Pasqual High School)

I still enjoy working and serving the scholars at Orange Glen High School! I think its fun learning and applying new research-based methods of teaching. I strive to help scholars as they are practicing & learning new habits which allow them to grow to be critical thinkers, problem solvers and lifelong learners. As you know, research shows that these qualities attribute to personal success in life and personal success and making a viable living is what I want for our kiddos!
I am highly qualified to teach scholars in classes of Computers/Business (College & Career Readiness), Math and Social Science.
I promote advocacy & personal empowerment in the form of:
  • guiding use of effective communication skills.
  • sharing knowledge of basic educational rights as outlined in ADA & IDEA.
  • promoting and supporting and/or teaching functional life, executive functioning and citizen skills.
  • academics: (setting high expectations, strive for higher order thinking & real-life application).

MISSING SCHOOL?-Umm, but we still have math learning happening...
When a scholar misses school, school is still in session for everyone and over an hour and 40 minutes of math class is missed for that absent scholar.
Absent scholars can re-connect with Ms. Coleman during Lunch or Extend time to figure out the missed assignments. Absent scholars can reach out to Ms. Coleman before or after classtime.

SYNERGY-Online Grade Program
Scholars & parents can read of special education/ELL techniques Ms. Coleman used for each class assignment. My math grades are updated approximately every week and a half. Most grades from assignments are based upon Math Content competency and/or Mathematical Practices. The math taught is at high school level.

QUIZZES & TESTS
Scholars can retake any of these, for a higher grade. Its best that Ms. Coleman be given prior notice so she can make sure she has new copies. Scholars are expected to use notes on tests. Quizzes are short (2-4 questions) and notes are not allowed to be used for quizzes. It is a common accommodation that Ms. Coleman helps scholars organize their notes, book and calculator before tests. Other accommodations that Ms. Coleman does are: read aloud instructions/questions, helping connect information in scholar's math notes and Ms. Coleman making more clear/re-wording math questions on math tests/quizzes and assignments.  In some instances dependent upon ability, scholars show their math knowledge/thinking by explaining answers to Ms. Coleman in addition to writing math answers.

CLASS ASSIGNMENTS & HOMEWORK
All scholars are expected to finish assignments during classtime. Scholars will be given ample time to finish assignments during class. Class assignments are not homework. Separate homework aka home practice, is consistently encouraged by Ms. Coleman.
In order to continue passing math class, all scholars need to turn in high school level quality math thinking. If a scholar is absent, it is okay to turn in late assignments without a penalty to the grade.

ACADEMIC BOOSTS & Academic Interventions
During class practice scholars will mostly work in squads to bounce their math thinking off of other people. Scholars can get additional individual math help from Ms. Coleman during most Lunch & Extend times. In addition, OGHS offers free Saturday tutoring sessions and before school and after school help sessions in the library.

EXTRA CREDIT
Extra credit may be offered in the form of math vocabulary questions (spoken/verbal) and/or perhaps math warm ups. Math packets for extra credit are not offered.
