She grew up with seven siblings and a mother who abused drugs to escape domestic violence. They lived in a community riddled with gang warfare. When she became a single mother at 15, she was determined to give her daughter a better life, so she became an emancipated minor at 16. She plans to attend Palomar College in the fall.
MECHA BBQ This Saturday MEChA will be having a BBQ at Kit Carson this Saturday at 1pm. There will be free food, games, and music. It is an open invitation to all students and especially to any one who is interested in being part of MEChA. This BBQ will be with Del Lago MEChA and SPHS MEChA.
National Scholarship Info Session! There will be a short info session on National Scholarships next Wednesday 9/4 @ lunch in the College and Career Center. Students will also learn about universities with top endowments that offer no loan (100% grant and work-study) financial aid packages. All seniors are invited!
Dancing Patriots Because SO many kids are excited about dance, we are starting a JV dance team next year in addition to our big coed varsity team. We will have a new JV coach as well to help bring in some new styles and experience. If you have any of the kids in either team, please congratulate them on a job well done and for being such encouraging, supportive young adults. We are all really excited for next year!
Planet Fitness Teen Challenge Planet Fitness is promoting their Teen Summer Challenge which allows teens ages 15-18 to work out at any Planet Fitness across the country for free from May 15 – September 1. There are no strings attached at all. For those under 18, they will have to go with a parent the first time to sign a waiver, but after that they can attend alone. Planet Fitness will be offering special classes geared toward teens to help them feel comfortable and get acquainted with gym-style workouts. Escondido’s Planet Fitness is located on East Valley Parkway.
Journalism Convention Results Students attended the National High School Journalism Convention in Anaheim. They were part of the convention staff and helped with check in, supporting speakers and assisting attendees, in addition to participating in sessions and contests.Leslie Martinez received an EXCELLENCE award (10%) in the First Year Photographer category. Arlin Sese received an HONORABLE MENTION in Newswriting—one of the toughest categories to compete in! Congratulations ladies!
Orange Glen Life Skills Class Gardens Our life skills class has been busy at work gardening on campus and their hard work will pay off as our culinary classes plan to use their herbs and vegetables in class.
Summer Open Gym Dates The gym will be open to students on June 10, 12, 17, 19 and July 8, 10, 15, 17, 22, 24, 29, 31 from 1:00pm-3:00pm. The cost is $2.00 at the door or $20 for the summer. Come get active!
Family Math Night - 5/15, 5-6pm Family Math Night is Wednesday 5-6pm right before the achievement awards. So if you are coming to the achievement awards, come by a little earlier. We will be located outside of the gym with tables set up to play math games. Some students will be presenting math problems as well. There will be hot dogs and snacks for the first 150 people.
